Miss Megs is a 16 week old bundle of bully energy, fun and cuddles.

She is 95% housetrained & crate trained and is a smart, fast learner. She loves to play with other dogs and older children, but her energy level is a bit much for children under 6. She has not had cat experience, and does have a fairly high, inquisitive prey drive. She will do best with a bully-savvy owner or family, as she is considers herself royalty and needs firm structure. Miss Megs is a joy to be around, and will give lots of love to an owner who will challenger her and dote on her. She is available through Carolina Care Bullies (http://tinyurl.com/megsccb) and grants audiences Tuesday – Thursday from 10 – 6 at EcoPaws in Raleigh (www.stitchandcompany.com).

I am a unique boy and my mommy says I’m wonderful! I am a 1 1/2 – 2 year old Australian Cattle dog mix.

Mommy says I am just perfect and so well mannered in the house and know I’m supposed to be calm – but I love to play outside – I have learned to fetch my toys and see that sharing my toys with people can be fun. I LOVE to be with my people and sleep on my dog bed every night on the floor by my Mommy’s side of the bed. Mommy calls me her shadow, whatever that is? I had what they called heartworms but with lots of love and care I am now much better and a brand new man. I am an athletic boy that spent the first 8 months of my life on a chain (and boy that’s no fun at all) but Mommy says better things are in store for me now! I need to be in a one dog only family seeing as I went so long without attention and I don’t really like to share it. I live with two little boys right now and Mommy says I couldn’t be any better with them – I love it when they give me hugs! Would you like to bring me into your family and give me all the things I should have been given from the start – and I will give you endless amounts of unconditional love!
*Pooger is neutered and current on vaccines – he is on monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Pooger needs to go to a family with a fenced in yard, lots of time to spend loving him, and no chains or runs allowed! Please submit an application if you are interested in meeting this wonderful boy or contact Christi @ cwdaize@hotmail.com. Thank you!*

No one did. So – I found myself at the Person County Shelter. That is NOT a nice place. The local rescue folks had already saved as many dogs as they could that week – and had no room for me – but the shelter staff loved me and tried to find a place for me to go. And so – that’s how I ended up with Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center. They took me in, brought me to a great vet, treated me for heartworms, helped me get healthy and my great foster mom has helped me learn how to be a great inside dog.

I need an experienced dog owner and someone who will treat me as kindly as I treat everyone. Please inquire at Lake Wheeler Veterinary Hospital.

Why, hello there! My name is Frances and I’m the loveliest lady you’ll ever meet. Don’t let my size fool you, I’m as sweet and gentle as can be. It takes me a little while to warm up to people and sometimes I can get a little nervous around new dog friends, so obedience classes would be a great way to help me boost my confidence. I already know how to “sit” and “shake”! I’m looking forward to having a home to call my own where I can be as silly and goofy as I want and then we can relax on the couch and maybe watch a movie together. I just can’t wait to go on long walks with you each morning and playing fetch in the fenced backyard in the afternoons. Come meet me today! I’m full grown at 50lbs. **my adoption fee is $115.00**

For more information on Frances, please contact the SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh at 919-772-2326 or at www.spcawake.org.

I’m looking for my new home since the people at my last home weren’t able to care for me the way I deserve. I believe in fate, so I know my perfect person will come along. Daily walks and time spent with you are priorities for me. I really enjoy stuffed toys, so I hope you’ll have a lot for me to play with; buster cubes and peanut butter filled kongs would also be great ways to keep me entertained. I’m an intelligent, composed lady and will enjoy training with you so I can learn all the neat tricks I’ve heard mentioned here. I can be a little weary of other dogs, so it may be best for me to be the only dog in the home. As long as we have each other, we’ll be a-ok! **My adoption fee is $115.00.**

She is current on her vaccinations, heartworm negative, spayed and house/crate trained.

She has lived with her current family for 10 months after she was found as a stray. Trixie has been a wonderful family dog, but has become dog selective and has shown aggression to certain dogs. Due to the extra training that she requires, Trixie needs to find a new home.

This sweet Bully knows her basic commands and will continue to flourish with consistent training. Like most Pities, Trixie is high energy and very loving. She loves to give kisses! Trixie enjoys the water, but does not like car rides, the vet or thunderstorms. She also likes toys, but will become protective of them around other dogs. Because of this, she does not like it when people try to take her toys out of her mouth. Trixie is great with children and is even cat friendly. She does fine with most dogs, but will need supervision and training to be around them on a daily basis. Trixie does have some separation anxiety, but again, that can improve with regular training and time.

Trixie was sick and malnourished when her current family found her. It would be a terrible shame if this beautiful girl survived the rough start in her life only to miss out on a happy ending. Please give Trixie a home and let her live happily ever after with you!

He went home with a family for a mere 24 hours or so.

The other dog (another pittie) and Casper got along beautifully, but the other dog could NOT understand why Casper wouldn’t play with him when he barked at him. And barked and barked! The neighbors complained, and the family realized that they would not have the few days it might take to have their current dog acclimate to a non-hearing dog.

It takes a bit of hands on training – engaging the hearing dog in it’s training (sitting, down, etc.) when he is clearly overexcited (and not getting a response from Casper, who can’t hear him)!. Also – taking the other dog out of sight of Casper so he will realize that Casper doesn’t respond to vocalizations. Most dogs will ‘get it’ fairly quickly, and will use a gentle nose touch to get the deaf dog’s attention.

Casper is back with us – he is a gentle soul, calm and attentive. Can you give him the time and attention he so well deserves? And if you have another dog, can you spend the time to supervise and help them learn how to communicate with each other? We need someone who has the determination to make Casper a full member of their loving family – so please come soon!

Casper’s a WONDERFUL boy! He’s deaf, but he’s not dumb!

There is such sweetness as in this puppy! Once he sees a visitor, he lies down as close to the front of the kennel as he can get, carefully adjusting himself to wherever you are sitting, so that he can get some cuddles. When I visited him last Saturday, he did just that. When I saw him a week later he recognized me, smart boy! As he was lying there, he put his head in my hand, and his paw on top of my other hand he was embracing me as best as he could.

Casper is a handsome boy, mostly white with subtle black spots. He is only 8 months old, and he weighs in at 52.2 pounds. He has some growing yet to do! He has already been neutered, and is up to date on his vaccinations and his monthly flea and tick preventative too.

Casper is deaf, so he will need some specialized care. He can’t hear you approaching, especially if he’s sleeping, so stomping your feet will alert him to your imminent arrival. If he’s sleeping or not looking towards you, the method is to toss a soft toy ahead of him (not at him!) so he’ll sense it when it lands, or to softly lay the end of his leash against him. He has already picked up on hand signal’ training, he knows sit’ and laydown’ already?.pretty good for a puppy!

For the time being, you will need to be extra alert when Casper is around other dogs. Due to his deafness, he hasn’t incorporated yet the routine body language’ that dogs use to communicate with each other. The so-called body language’ includes vocalizations which he can’t hear! Many hearing dogs do very well with deaf dogs they become the ears’ for the deaf animal. The deaf dog cues off of the hearing dog, and it often works very well.

Casper belonged to the stepson of the person who brought him to us. The stepson was not able to care for him, and they already had their limit of two dogs. Casper lived with the stepson since he was a puppy, so he must be sad and missing his person.

Casper seems to get along with everyone, likes to ride in the car, and is learning how to walk on a loose leash. He is housetrained (like all our dogs, he will need remedial housetraining, because he won’t know where the door to get outside is located at your house).
Casper is quiet but just because he is deaf doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a voice! He gave a cute little chuckle’ when another dog walked by, so I think he could easily learn to get MY attention by using it he already uses touch to get people’s attention. That would be useful to let me know something was up, or that he needed to go out.

Many owners of deaf dogs use bells hanging on the door knob as an alert. The dog noses the bells, and the owner opens the door! Also, I’ve heard of using wireless door bells they are louder, and the dog just needs to learn to push the button hard enough to ring the chimes. One of our dogs comes to get us when he needs to go out (strangely, he never barks, just fetches us!). Do be careful not to forget to let him in once he is out he won’t necessarily bark to come in like hearing dogs. I’m sure you can figure out a safe method! I always have a place of shade and shelter from the wind, and fresh water outside at all times, just in case. My dogs have access to get into the garage when they’re outside, and that’s their safety zone.

The internet has many online groups of dog owners with deaf dogs check them out! But first please come and meet Casper. He deserves a loving home to grow up in, and to be loved like the special fellow he is. He is full of love himself, and just longing to find his forever home. Come soon! Casper is a courtesy listing and is located at Frederick County Animal Control in Maryland.

She adjusts to new circumstances very well and enjoys being sociable with everyone she meets.

Apple is crazy happy to run around in a secure fenced yard and given 15 minutes to explore on her own. She will then resume her connection to everything around her and her recall is great. Watch out for the Hound tail though — When she is wagging it you will wonder how her tail is still attached!
Finding things of interest inside the house is Apple’s specialty. She knows what things are her toys and has a fondness for dragging each one out, one at a time and creating a new pile of toys in her bed area.

Apple currently lives with two other dogs and gets along famously with them. It’s easy to see in her eyes she is living the “puppyhood” she missed out on earlier in her life. Her favorite spot is to curl up with one of the dogs and be the small spoon inside his curled up form.
Even though Apple has learned quickly what is expected of her, I would never trust her to recall in an unfenced area. She should never be let off leash outside a securely fenced area.

Understandably from being on the run, Apple has developed a mild fear of thunder and other loud noises. When she hears that, she will retreat to the comfort of her crate.

Apple is a heartwarming rescue story and we hope you’ll consider making he a member of your home pack.

Apple was found wandering a highway in the Wilmington area just before Christmas 2009. She was immediately taken to the rescuer’s vet to be checked out and cleared for interaction with other dogs. The vet found her emaciated at 36lbs. and speculated she had been without food or shelter for at least two months. There was also evidence that she had previously had puppies.
